The British Society for Spondyloarthritis (BRITSpA) is a group of professionals working in the UK with a commitment to advancing knowledge and treatment of Spondyloarthritis.
BRITSpA was created in 2014 by a group of clinicians with an interest in Spondyloarthritis. Our main purpose was to facilitate the sharing of information related to all aspects of the Spondyloarthritis group of diseases. including but not limited to axial SpA (including Ankylosing Spondylitis), Psoriatic arthritis, Reactive arthritis, arthritis related to inflammatory bowel disease and undifferentiated Spondyloarthritis. The idea was an integrated, collaborative team approach to create a network among members of the various medical disciplines and allied health professionals who manage or investigate aspects of these conditions and related disorders to enhance research, diagnosis and treatment of the Spondyloarthritis in the UK.
BRITSpA’s main educational event is its members-only Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) which takes place over two days each September. It provides a challenging and thought-provoking programme and networking opportunity for our membership (Who Are We), which includes rheumatologists, radiologists, immunologists, nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and non-clinical scientists. The ASM is a unique occasion for research questions to be formulated and discussed, and incorporates The Andrew Keat Lecture, honouring the co-founder of our charity, not just for his important contribution to the field of SpA, but to reflect the huge respect and affection in which he was held. Another highlight is the Abstract Competition with a £200 award for original research in each of three main categories: clinical, basic science and service development, and the opportunity to present this to the membership.
