The Inaugural BRITSpA meeting was held in Birmingham on the 16th and 17th September 2015. The attendance was excellent and attending by a variety of healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and academics.
The 2 day meeting was chaired by Dr Karl Gaffney (Norfolk and Norwich Hospital) and Dr Raj Sengupta (Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases). The first evening started with an update on the excellent progress of the BSRBR-AS register by Dr Gary Macfarlane (Aberdeen) and from Debbie Cook (NASS Director) who updated the audience on the sterling work done by NASS in the last year.
2015 has been an important year for SpA with the eagerly awaited update of the NICE Biologics guidelines. Dr Karl Gaffney (Norwich) presented an update on the Final Appraisal Determination (FAD) which includes the use of biologics in the treatment of active non radiographic axial spondyloarthritis patients and which recommends switching anti TNF therapies in patients who fail to respond to their initial biologic.
